Safety knife US53 – with concealed blade

Cutting depth 5.5 mm | plastic housing | tape slitter

Tortoris US53 is a safety level 3 safety knife with a concealed blade. Finger contact with the blade is not possible before, during or after the cut.

The housing of the US53 is made of high-quality glass-fibre-reinforced plastic and is particularly ergonomically shaped – the knife is therefore designed for frequent use of up to 1,000 cuts per day.

The US53 can be operated from both sides and is suitable for right- and left-handed users without conversion. At only 12 g it belongs to the featherweight category and therefore sits particularly lightly in the hand.

The Tortoris US53 is universally applicable for opening cartons, film and strapping, but is especially suited to use in logistics, shipping and warehousing. Safety knives overview

Highlights

  • Maximum safety: concealed blade (safety level 3)
  • High dimensional stability: housing made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic
  • Short cutting depth: 5.5 mm for precise, safe work
  • Blade usable on both sides: both edges can be used, after which the entire disposable knife is replaced
  • Integrated tape slitter: Parcel tape can be slit at the end of the handle without damaging the goods

Applications & cutting materials

The Tortoris US53 is designed for films, strapping and adhesive tape – and, unlike many BoxCutters, also opens corrugated board very well. The somewhat wider cutting channel ensures high safety but is not suitable for thick or bulky materials such as polystyrene, rubber or ropes.

Knife know-how

Level 3 safety knives keep the blade permanently concealed – it does not get safer than that. The Tortoris US53 shows how much performance there still is in this design: from the concave-ground hook blade from Solingen and the low cutting force to the well-thought-out cutting channel. Here you can see at a glance what makes the 2025 test winner – and where its limits lie.

Further features
Knife type: safety knife
Safety knives are designed for continuous professional use — usually with an automatic or manual blade guard that prevents cuts when the knife is not in use. The standard choice in logistics, retail and production.
Ergonomics: ergonomic design
Ergonomic design — the handle shape is designed around the hand position when cutting and reduces fatigue with repeated use.
Ergonomics: left- and right-handed
Left- and right-handed — can be used with either hand, with or without conversion depending on the model, equally suitable for left- and right-handed users.
Weight: < 50 g
< 50 g — featherlight, practically unnoticeable when carried all day, for example on the belt or in the hand. This model weighs 12 g.
Material: premium carbon steel
Premium carbon steel — refined alloy with even better edge retention, for particularly demanding continuous use.
Coating: uncoated
Uncoated — constant basic sharpness without coating wear, cost-efficient and proven. The most economical choice for standard applications.
Sharpness: high initial sharpness
High initial sharpness — especially sharp from the first cut, ideal when maximum cutting performance is needed immediately.
Sharpness: long edge life
Long edge life — much longer service life until the next blade change than standard blades. Reduces change intervals and blade consumption in intensive use.
Blade safety: without snap-off segments
Without snap-off segments — continuous blade without predetermined breaking points, no risk of a segment breaking off uncontrolled.
Blade safety: few mounting holes
Few mounting holes — fewer blade mounting holes mean fewer predetermined breaking points under lateral force, and a lower risk of uncontrolled breakage.

Alternatives

The Tortoris US53 is the overall winner among the BoxCutters – maximum cutting performance with the highest safety. If you prefer the established best-value classic with a stainless steel blade, you will find it in the OLFA SK-15. And if you want to change the blade instead of replacing the entire knife, the CB100 is the right choice. Here you will find suitable alternatives with a concealed blade in direct comparison.

Accessories

Using the large eyelet, the Tortoris US53 can be secured with a lanyard so that it is always within reach in the warehouse. A collection box ensures safe disposal of dull disposable knives, a cutting ruler with a steel edge ensures exact cuts, and a robust belt pouch ensures quick access in daily use.

Frequently asked questions

The most frequently asked questions about the Tortoris US53: from the disposable principle without blade change and the concave-ground premium blade from Solingen to the surprisingly strong carton performance and the differences from the OLFA SK-15. Answered concisely for purchasing and practice.

Why can the blade not be changed on the Tortoris US53?

The Tortoris US53 is a disposable knife: the hook blade is firmly and securely built into the housing. Both edges can be used – when the first is dull, turn the knife over and continue cutting with the second edge. Only then is the entire knife replaced, with no exposed blade to handle at all.

What makes the blade of the US53 special?

The blade of the Tortoris US53 is a concave-ground hook blade made of high-quality carbon steel, manufactured in Solingen and Powered by Mozart. The curved grind practically draws the material into the cut – this produces exceptionally clean cuts and, in the BoxCutter test 2025, the best cut quality of all 19 knives.

Is the US53 also suitable for opening cartons?

Yes – and much better than most BoxCutters. While many level 3 safety knives only cut films and straps reliably, the Tortoris US53, thanks to its sharp hook blade, also cleanly opens single- to triple-wall corrugated board. The design is deliberately not intended for very thick or bulky materials.

Which materials is the Tortoris US53 suitable for?

The US53 is the right choice for stretch and shrink film, adhesive tape, PP and PET strapping, cords and corrugated cartons. Because of the 5.4 mm cutting channel, designed for safety, it is not intended for thick or bulky materials such as polystyrene, rubber or ropes.

What distinguishes the Tortoris US53 from the OLFA SK-15?

Both are level 3 safety knives with a concealed blade. The Tortoris US53 is the overall test winner with the lowest cutting force (20 N) and the best cut quality – the first choice when maximum cutting performance counts. The OLFA SK-15 scores as the best-value winner with a stainless steel blade that is particularly suited to damp environments.
