Pen Cutter manual – ceramic blade for safe opening

Ceramic blade | safety grind blade | compact pen-cutter design

The Pen Cutter manual safety knife is identical in construction to the automatic U008 – the only difference is the manual, three-stage blade retraction. Safety here does not come from a retraction mechanism but from the safety grind of the ceramic blade itself: the blade geometry limits the cutting depth, regardless of whether the blade is dirty or jammed. Formally the knife is classified as safety level 0, but because of this blade technology it in fact works considerably more safely than a classic cutter knife of this level. The smooth-running blade slider offers three blade positions in a compact pen-cutter design – well suited to users who need consistently safe blade guidance even when opening sacked goods. Suitable for safety officers, logistics managers and production managers who need a robust niche solution. Safety knives overview

Highlights

  • Considerably higher occupational safety: manual, three-stage blade retraction (officially safety level 0, functionally comparable with level 1)
  • Compact, familiar handling: slim pen-cutter design like a thick ballpoint pen, usable by right- and left-handed users without conversion
  • Quick adaptation to the cutting task: smooth-running, rubberised blade slider with three adjustable blade positions
  • Suitable for sensitive environments: ceramic blade spark-free, non-magnetic, electrically non-conductive and rust-free
  • Safety directly at the blade: safety grind limits the cutting depth to 11 mm – protection is retained even if the blade is dirty or jammed

Knife know-how

Not every safety knife is built the same – and you only notice it when it matters in everyday use. In the knife know-how section we show you at a glance how the Pen Cutter manual performs in the most important respects: from the safety mechanism and grip quality to blade performance. This lets you judge whether it suits your application. If you have questions about choosing, we are happy to help you personally.

Further features
Knife type: safety knife
Safety knives are designed for continuous professional use — usually with an automatic or manual blade guard that prevents cuts when the knife is not in use. The standard choice in logistics, retail and production.
Ergonomics: ergonomic design
Ergonomic design — the handle shape is designed around the hand position when cutting and reduces fatigue with repeated use.
Ergonomics: tool-free blade change
Tool-free blade change — insert a new blade without tools, done in seconds.
Ergonomics: left- and right-handed
Left- and right-handed — can be used with either hand, with or without conversion depending on the model, equally suitable for left- and right-handed users.
Ergonomics: smooth-running slider
Smooth-running slider — operates with little effort, noticeably more comfortable with frequent use.
Weight: < 50 g
< 50 g — featherlight, practically unnoticeable when carried all day, for example on the belt or in the hand. This model weighs 33 g.
Material: ceramic
Ceramic — extremely hard and rust-free, stays sharp exceptionally long, more sensitive to lateral loads than steel.
Coating: uncoated
Uncoated — constant basic sharpness without coating wear, cost-efficient and proven. The most economical choice for standard applications.
Sharpness: normal initial sharpness
Normal initial sharpness — solid basic sharpness from the first cut, entirely sufficient for everyday use.
Sharpness: very long edge life
Very long edge life — maximum service life between two blade changes, for the most intensive continuous use with as little changing effort as possible.
Blade safety: without snap-off segments
Without snap-off segments — continuous blade without predetermined breaking points, no risk of a segment breaking off uncontrolled.
Blade safety: rounded tip
Rounded tip — prevents puncture injuries without limiting the cutting performance of the blade edge. Particularly relevant for overhead or blind work.
Blade safety: safety grind
Safety grind — deliberately reduced initial sharpness noticeably makes accidental skin cuts harder, without making the blade unusable for the material being cut.

Blade change – how it works

  1. 1 Turn the front cap to the right and pull it off towards the front.
  2. 2 Extend the blade and remove it to the left.
  3. 3 Turn the blade over or insert a new blade.
  4. 4 Align the blade with its notch exactly on the lug of the blade holder.
  5. 5 Put the cover on from the front, with the line marking facing up.
  6. 6 Turn the cover slightly to the left until it audibly clicks into place.
  7. 7 Dispose of the old or dull blade safely.

Replacement blades

The Pen Cutter manual is supplied with a K071 (ceramic blade with safety grind, rounded tip). The knife accepts only the short ceramic safety blade in pen-cutter format – check compatibility when buying. Overview of special blades

Variants

The Pen Cutter manual is identical in construction to the PenCutter automatic (U008) – both use the same ceramic safety blade with safety grind and the same rubberised blade slider. The only difference is the blade retraction: while the Pen Cutter manual retracts the blade by hand in three stages, the blade of the U008 retracts automatically. Choose the variant that suits your type of use.

Alternatives

Besides the Pen Cutter manual, CURT offers further compact safety knives with automatic blade retraction: the U10514 (Mini ceramic) also uses a ceramic blade, but with automatic instead of manual retraction. The U019 (Ergocut mini) stands out with a very low price and a short blade length. For deburring tasks, the SMR100 with a scalpel blade made of premium carbon steel is suitable instead.

Accessories

Complement the Pen Cutter manual with matching accessories: collection boxes for dull blades, lanyards as a safety cord, cutting rulers for precise cuts and holsters for safe storage.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the Pen Cutter manual – we answer them here in detail. If you have further questions, we are happy to help you personally: To the contact form

Which replacement blades fit the Pen Cutter manual?
The Pen Cutter manual accepts only the short Slice ceramic blade in pen-cutter format. Suitable blades are the K071 (rounded tip) and the K070 (pointed version) – both with safety grind.
Is the Pen Cutter manual detectable?
The Pen Cutter manual has no detectability certification. It is therefore not suitable for use in food or pharmaceutical environments where metal detectors are mandatory.
Is the Pen Cutter manual suitable for left-handed users?
The Pen Cutter manual can be used directly from both sides – no conversion is needed for left-handed users. The smooth-running blade slider is equally accessible to both hands.
Which safety level does the Pen Cutter manual have?
Because of its manual blade retraction, the Pen Cutter manual is formally classified as safety level 0. Thanks to the safety grind of the ceramic blade, however, the actual protective effect is closer to that of a classic safety level 1 knife.
