SK-12 – fully and reliably detectable

Automatic blade retraction | stainless steel housing | for food & pharma

The OLFA SK-12 is a safety knife made specifically for food production and pharma – industries with particularly high hygiene and safety requirements for the tools they use. The automatic blade retraction (safety level 1) pulls the blade back into the handle by itself after every cut as soon as the slider is released – this clearly reduces the risk of cut injuries in day-to-day work. The blade can be changed without tools in a few simple steps directly at the workstation. By simply repositioning the slider, the knife can also be used by right- and left-handed users, without the need for an additional model. The OLFA SK-12 is therefore suited to safety officers and production managers looking for a reliable safety knife for everyday use in food and pharmaceutical companies. More in the Safety knives overview.

Highlights

  • High occupational safety: automatic blade retraction (safety level 1)
  • Very robust and durable: Blade, spring and housing made entirely of stainless steel
  • Ideal for food production and pharma: easy to clean, e.g. in a sodium hypochlorite bath, then rinse clean
  • Outstandingly detectable: all components made of metal – far more reliable than safety knives with an aluminium housing
  • Certified for the food sector: NSF certified

Further features
Knife type: safety knife
Safety knives are designed for continuous professional use — usually with an automatic or manual blade guard that prevents cuts when the knife is not in use. The standard choice in logistics, retail and production.
Ergonomics: tool-free blade change
Tool-free blade change — insert a new blade without tools, done in seconds.
Ergonomics: left- and right-handed
Left- and right-handed — can be used with either hand, with or without conversion depending on the model, equally suitable for left- and right-handed users.
Ergonomics: smooth-running slider
Smooth-running slider — operates with little effort, noticeably more comfortable with frequent use.
Weight: < 100 g
< 100 g — noticeably lighter than all-metal knives without compromising on stability. Comfortable with frequent, repeated use throughout the day. This model weighs 64 g.
Material: stainless steel
Stainless steel does not rust and is insensitive to moisture — the right choice for wet areas, food production or outdoor use. Slightly shorter edge life than carbon steel.
Coating: uncoated
Uncoated — constant basic sharpness without coating wear, cost-efficient and proven. The most economical choice for standard applications.
Sharpness: normal initial sharpness
Normal initial sharpness — solid basic sharpness from the first cut, entirely sufficient for everyday use.
Sharpness: long edge life
Long edge life — much longer service life until the next blade change than standard blades. Reduces change intervals and blade consumption in intensive use.
Blade safety: without snap-off segments
Without snap-off segments — continuous blade without predetermined breaking points, no risk of a segment breaking off uncontrolled.

Blade change – how it works

  1. 1 Push the slider on the front forwards approx. 0.5 cm, as far as the marking
  2. 2 Fold the slider upwards
  3. 3 Carefully tip the loose blade forwards out of the housing
  4. 4 Turn the blade over or insert a new replacement blade (K022)
  5. 5 Push the blade into the housing with your fingers until the notches are level with the long hole
  6. 6 Fold the slider back down
  7. 7 Check that the blade has latched securely
  8. 8 Dispose of the dull blade safely

Replacement blades

The OLFA SK-12 is supplied with a K022 (trapezoid blade made of stainless steel, usable on both sides). The knife only takes this matching trapezoid blade – check compatibility when buying. More in the Overview of all trapezoid blades.

Alternatives

Alongside the OLFA SK-12 we carry other detectable safety knives with automatic blade retraction. Unlike the SK-12, the U19MDP, U010, the martor Profi 25 MDP and the H035MDP each use an aluminium or disposable housing – detectable, but not at the stainless steel level of the SK-12. They are suitable if there should be no blade change or if a different ergonomic concept is wanted.

Accessories

Complement the OLFA SK-12 with matching accessories: collection boxes for dull blades, lanyards as a safety cord, cutting rulers for precise cuts and holsters for safe storage.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the OLFA SK-12 – we answer them here in detail. If you have further questions, we are happy to help you personally: To the contact form

How do I change the blade on the OLFA SK-12?

The blade on the OLFA SK-12 is changed without tools: push the slider forwards approx. 0.5 cm until the hole in the blade is level with the marking, then fold the slider upwards and carefully slide the blade out. The K022 replacement blade can be used on both sides – simply turn it over or insert a new one and close the slider again.

Is the OLFA SK-12 detectable?

Yes, the OLFA SK-12 is made entirely of stainless steel – blade, spring and housing. This makes it far more reliably detectable than safety knives with an aluminium or plastic housing, and it is suited specifically to food production and pharma.

Is the OLFA SK-12 suitable for left-handed users?

Yes, the OLFA SK-12 can be used by right- and left-handed users. To do so, the slider has to be converted once; after that the knife can be operated with either hand.

Which safety level does the OLFA SK-12 have?

The OLFA SK-12 achieves safety level 1: the blade retracts automatically into the handle as soon as the slider is released – this clearly reduces cut injuries compared with knives without automatic retraction.
