Industrial or safety scraper, steel or ceramic blade: what matters when removing coatings.
A scraper removes material from a surface without cutting it. In this guide we show
- what scrapers are suitable for,
- how industrial and safety scrapers differ and
- when a steel blade and when a ceramic blade is the better choice.

What is a scraper for?
Scrapers remove coatings that cannot be removed with a cloth:
- Paint and varnish residue
- Adhesive and adhesive residue
- Sealant and silicone
- Labels and stickers
- Crusts on glass, metal and plastic
The blade is guided over the surface at a shallow angle. The shallower the angle, the lower the risk of damaging the surface.

Industrial scraper or safety scraper?
Industrial scrapers
- Long handles (20 and 30 cm) for powerful work, also standing on larger surfaces
- Blade is clamped firmly and replaced when worn
- Suitable when force and reach are the priority
Safety scrapers
- Blade is retracted after work or is made of ceramic
- Less exposed blade when putting down and transporting
- Suitable when cuts are to be avoided

Steel or ceramic blade?
Steel blades are robust and the first choice for rough work. Ceramic blades do not rust and are non-magnetic. However, they are hard and therefore sensitive to leverage and side forces: with a ceramic blade you scrape, you do not lever.
Ceramic safety blades are from Slice. More on the manufacturer page.
Mind the surface
Glass, painted surfaces and plastics scratch with different ease. Test the scraper first on an inconspicuous spot and do not pull the blade across the scraping direction over the surface.
As a glass scraper for paint residue, adhesive and labels on glass surfaces, industrial scrapers with a steel blade and safety scrapers with a ceramic blade can be used. Guide the blade as flat as possible.
