Scissors or knife, small or large, straight or curved: decision aid for commercial use.
Scissors cut without a backing and without an openly guided blade. In this guide we show
- when scissors are preferable to a knife,
- which features count when choosing and
- what you should observe for safety at the workplace.

Scissors or knife?
Scissors separate material between two blades. The workpiece needs no backing for this, and the cutting edge stays guided between the blades. A knife, on the other hand, is the better choice for straight cuts along a ruler, for thick materials and for opening packaging.
Rather scissors
- Straps, cords and strapping
- Film, bags and nets
- Textiles, paper and thin plastics
- Cuts in the air, without a backing
Rather a knife
- Opening cartons and packaging
- Straight cuts along a ruler
- Thick, tough or multi-layer materials
- Matching selection: safety knives and cutter knives

What to look for when choosing
- Size: Small scissors are suitable for detail work and tight spots, 8″ (20 cm) for powerful and longer cuts.
- Shape: Straight blades cut along the edge, curved blades make it easier to cut in the surface and around curves.
- Handle: What matters is that the scissors sit comfortably in your hand and do not press during longer work. Check whether right- and left-handed users can work with them.
- Cutting edge: Adhesive and film residue build up between the blades. Scissors that are easy to clean stay usable for longer.
- Place of use: Food areas, cleanrooms and electronics manufacturing have their own requirements. Ask us before you order.
Safety
You can also injure yourself with scissors. However, the risk is lower than with a knife with an exposed blade, because the cutting edge is guided between the blades. Storage and handling are therefore decisive: scissors belong in a fixed place, not loose in pockets or drawers.
Whether safety scissors are sufficient for your workplace is best clarified in the risk assessment. We are happy to advise you: +49 (0)211 – 97174619.
